St. Elizabeth School Alumni & Friends Newsletter - March 2009

Dear Alumni & Friends:

A belated Happy St. Patrick's Day! Hope you all enjoyed the "wearin' of the green!" Easter is fast approaching and we New Yorkers are still looking for Spring to arrive with warmer weather. After a brief respite, we are back in our winter coats!

Sr. Eileen is home and doing well. As I told you last month, she suffered a fall in the beginning of February and broke her hip. The surgery to replace the hip went well and she hopes to be back soon.

The school was able to buy a new Smartboard with our Technology funds. This combination of a whiteboard and a computer enables the students and teachers to control computer applications directly from the screen, write notes on the board in digital ink, and save the work as on a computer.

St. Elizabeth School was closed for 3 days in February due to a major problem with the main water line coming into the building. The DEP found a crack in this pipe and it had to be repaired immediately. The cost to the school after insurance was $16,000.

Bill Appel has finalized plans for the Class of '59 to celebrate its 50th Anniversary! Save the date: Sunday, October 11, 2009 beginning with the 12:30 Mass at St. Elizabeth Church followed by a reception in the school. Please be sure we have your correct address, phone, email, etc.

Kathleen Brady Liss '51, now lives in West Hartford, CT near her children and grandchildren. We were talking about her years at St. E. and she reminded me of some of our history. She remembers the old St. E. Building which burned down and how the students commuted from their Washington Heights neighborhood to St. Joseph of the Holy Family School on 127th St. and Morningside Avenue until the new St. E. was built. The Class of '51 was the first to graduate from this new building. We would love to hear more memories of this time. Classes of the 50's, lets hear from you!

Admiral Patrick McGrath, Class of '71 and a cousin of Sr. Shelia Kelly RSM, visited our school last month. Now stationed in San Diego, the Admiral, a lawyer, spoke with our older students about the value of a military career. He stressed discipline, education, confidence, and many other values that military life has to offer. St. Elizabeth thanks him very much for coming to see us; he also gave a presentation at Alumni Career Day at Cardinal Spellman High School that morning. It is great for our students to meet and hear form our alumni and know that they have a lifelong bond as graduates of St. Elizabeth School.

Kathy Wagner '77 reported the passing of Silvana Pulice '77.

Ingrid Castillo '80 would like to form a committee to plan a 30th Reunion for her class. She has kept in touch with about 28 classmates. I have emailed her a list of the addresses we have on file. Please double check with me via email that we have your correct address and phone.

The dedication of the Peace Garden will be in Fall 2009. More details to come!

We are still looking for "missing" alumni. Please send me an email double checking your info or providing info on other classmates. We are especially looking for info on grads after 1996. No info will be posted on the website unless you okay it!

Looking forward to hearing from you!
