Renovation Project Receives Challenge
Grant
Please Help Us Meet Our Goal!
We
just received word that the school will receive a Challenge Grant
of up to $30,000 from the Endowment for Inner-City Education to retile
the first and second hallways and classrooms! For
every dollar we raise for this project, the Foundation will match it
one-to-one. Already $10,000 has been raised, but ...
We need
your help! Our goal is to raise the remaining $20,000
needed to complete this project, which is important for a safe, clean
environment for our students. We have until May 31 to do
this. Any gift, large or small, will help. You may donate
online or print out a mailable gift form, both by going to www.steliznyc.org/challenge.asp.
Thank you so much for your help!
This
is part of an ongoing project to replace the very-worn original 1950s
flooring. Most recently, the third floor was completed in 2006.
We have also planned a school-wide candy sale and hope to raise $5,000
which can be matched.
Students Receive High School Scholarships
The Friends of Nick
Foundation awarded four-year high school scholarships to eighth
graders Hector Marmolejos and Simona Diamantopoulos, who will attend
All Hallows and Mother Cabrini High Schools respectively. The
scholarships culminated a full-year program in which the Foundation
sponsored a curriculum for eighth graders on
character-building, as well as a series of evening workshops with
the students and their parents. The Foundation is named after
the late Nick Forstmann, benefactor of Archdiocesan programs.
Student Art Work Exhibited
The art work of a number
of our students was recently displayed at the Morgan Stanley
Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
The event was part of the school's participation in the
Creative Classrooms Visual Arts Program, sponsored by the
Patrons Program of the Archdiocese of New York. The grant
provides an art educator who gives in-service training to
regular classroom teachers, to assist them in integrating art
into regular classroom instruction. We have been very
blessed to have Miss Sara Fendelman, who joined the
faculty this year as our new art teacher.
Videoconferencing in the Classroom
The seventh grade recently
participated in a videoconferencing lesson with several
other schools. The lesson, which was a part of the Literature
curriculum, was entitled "Following Your Dream." The
equipment used was originally received as part of the school's NYS
Department of Education Title IID Grant.
