March 2001 - CYO basketball has returned to St. Elizabeth School. This
winter, the school’s three basketball teams joined the Catholic Youth Organization League.
Coached by Physical Education Teacher Justine Clifford and her brother Kevin Clifford,
the teams represent fifth and sixth grade boys, seventh and eighth grade boys and the
sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls. Through the league, they played games and
scrimmages with students from other Archdiocesan schools in Manhattan.
According to Principal Sr. Noreen Nolan, the league allows students to build valuable
skills in teamwork, sportsmanship and self-discipline, and the use of professional referees
gives the students the feel of playing an official game. They are also able to meet and
interact with many other children in the league.
“All of the teams improved their play,” says Coach Justine Clifford. “The biggest challenge
was that two of the three teams were beginners, but the kids did an excellent job and we are
looking forward to next year.”
