May 2003 - This has been a wonderful
year of growth in our Athletic Program.
The boys’ basketball team made it all the way to the CYO
Parish League Championship game. The exciting final game had almost 75 parents,
staff and students attending. While they lost in a close game on Saturday, March
8, we are very proud of both the boys and girls basketball teams, and look
forward to next year’s season.
The students were led by coaches sixth grade teacher
Michael O’Boyle, former physical education teacher Justine Clifford,
parishioner Rick Solis, and parent Ken Catoe, Sr. We also enjoyed watching four
of our students, Stephanie Santiago, Johnalyn Cartagena, Francisco Roa, and Juan
Gomez , who represented us in the CYO All-Star Game.
The program was supported by generous donations of new
uniforms for both teams from Kevin Lenaghan of Cleveland, OH, and a new
scoreboard from the Clifford family.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to watch their favorite
teachers and principal Sr. Noreen play at the faculty- student game on March 11.
The student team won in double overtime by 2 points in front of a packed house.
What a game!
Softball season begins in April with about ten games
throughout the area. The school team is a part of Uptown W.I.N.S. (Women In
Neighborhood Sports), and is sponsored by New York Presbyterian Hospital for
schools in upper Manhattan. Be sure to follow our website for the schedule, and
come support our team if you can!
Beyond the sports program, all St. Elizabeth students have
the opportunity to improve skills and build self-esteem through the physical
education program. This winter we welcomed a new physical education teacher
Fidel Vicioso, a 1985 school alum. Students in grades K to 8 have physical
education classes each week.
