May 2003 - St. Elizabeth School recently
received a grant from First Book - New York City to help promote reading in our
primary grades. The school will receive $2240 in books for students in grades
pre-kindergarten through three.
The nearly 900 books will be used to expand classroom
libraries to promote interest in reading for pleasure, and at the end of the
school year the books will be distributed to the students to help establish
their own home libraries.
First Book is a national non-profit organization that
distributes free, brand-new books. Under the framework of the program, we will
be able to design and order our own literary collections.
This grant augments an already very comprehensive reading
program that integrates literacy across the curriculum. It follows a three-year
Library Connections grant from the Archdiocesan Patrons Program to expand and
automate the school library collection.
