June 2006
- The school’s Peace Garden courtyard will
be developed into a playground for the students, thanks to a $34,000 grant from
The Betty Barrett and Juanita Bateman Foundation. Father Joseph Sanches ‘53
was instrumental in obtaining the grant.
The work, which will include repair to the side wall and
fencing, new benches, and the construction of a flower bed grotto using memorial
bricks engraved with names of loved ones, will be completed this spring. The
grant will also provide for additional play equipment for the children.
St. Elizabeth School dedicated the space in November 2002,
honoring the victims of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 bound for the
Dominican Republic. It will be used both for recreation for the After School
Program, physical education classes, and sports, and as a place for prayer and
reflection.
The Peace Garden project truly exemplifies our mission of
educating the whole child. Within this safe, beautiful space in the heart of
Washington Heights, students will grow in physical wellness and spirituality.
Memorial benches and trees are still available, and make a wonderful legacy
while supporting the project. For more information, call the Office of
Development at 212-568-7291 extension 13, or email officedev@steliznyc.org.
