SCHOOL DEDICATES NEW SCIENCE CENTER

June 2006 -  The school dedicated its new St. Albert the Great Science Center at a ceremony on Thursday, February 2, during Catholic Schools Week. A number of alumni, friends, students, parents, faculty and staff were present, as well as principals of Noth Manhattan Catholic Schools and representatives of the Superintendent’s Office of the Archdiocese of New York.

Student Council President Darisa Alcantara, Grade 8, welcomed the guests, and TEAK Program Fellow Tatiana Arnold, Grade 8, led the closing prayer. Bishop Gerald T. Walsh, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Church, gave the blessing, and teachers Thelma Morillo and James Tomassi hung the plaque on behalf of the faculty and staff.

Following the ceremony, students delighted the guests with demonstrations in chemistry, biology and robotics, using laptop computers donated by the Beaumont Foundation of America. Refreshments followed.

The Center, which includes lab tables, desks, an instructor's demonstration table, projection and distance learning equipment, electrified microscopes, models, and fish tanks and terrariums, will house the school's expanding Science Program.

The program boasts a new WeatherBug Achieve weather station, and the school’s New York State Department of Education Title IID Grant Program, which includes the cross-curriculum integration of science, math and literacy through distance learning.

In addition to the Beaumont Foundation, whose grant was facilitated by William Cullen’ 70 renovations and the acquisition of equipment were made possible by grants from the Endowment for Inner-City Education of the Archdiocese of New York; the Charles Hayden Foundation; the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation, Inc., made possible by Alexandra Garcia Cohen ‘78; and The Betty Barrett and Juanita Bateman Foundation, facilitated by Father Joseph Sanches ‘53.

The Science Center will provide yet another opportunity for St. Elizabeth School students to use collaborative experiential learning. It has been dedicated to St. Albert the Great, a thirteenth century member of the Dominican Order of Preachers and the patron saint of scientists.
